how upwork reports your income

the form arrives. or it doesn't. you still owe.

form type
1099-K (us freelancers, via payoneer in some cases)
2026 threshold
$20,000 + 200 transactions for 2026.
the part upwork won't tell you
upwork uses payoneer or direct deposit. tax forms come from upwork itself or from payoneer depending on payment method.
how the pay actually works

upwork's fee is flat 10% (for newer contracts) or 20%/10%/5% sliding scale for legacy contracts based on cumulative billing with each client. plus a $0.15 'client deposit' fee per project, plus connects (the credits you spend bidding). all of these are business expenses.

the catch

upwork's connects system requires you to pay to bid on jobs. those connects (you pay cash for them) are business expenses — but most freelancers forget to deduct them. it adds up: a $20/month connect refill is $240/year in deductions you might miss.

deductions

5 deductions specific to upwork

deduction 1
upwork's service fee (10–20%)

the biggest one. if your 1099-K reports the gross billing, the fee upwork kept deducts as a commission expense.

deduction 2
connects (the pay-to-bid currency)

every connect you bought is a business expense. log them — upwork's monthly billing receipt is your record.

deduction 3
subscription tools relevant to your work

developers: github copilot, ides. writers: grammarly. designers: figma, adobe. all deduct.

deduction 4
home office for remote work

if you have a dedicated workspace, the home office deduction applies. internet too.

deduction 5
professional development

courses, books, certifications related to your work. udemy, coursera, masterclass — all deductible if directly related.

questions

upwork, specifically

upwork's fee changed — do i deduct what i actually paid?+

yes. whatever upwork kept in commission for the year is your deduction, regardless of the rate structure.

i got paid in usd via payoneer — different tax form?+

payoneer issues its own 1099-K if you crossed thresholds. it reports gross payments to your payoneer account. upwork's report and payoneer's report may overlap — don't double-count.

long-term clients off upwork — still freelance income?+

yes. any payment you receive for freelance work is self-employment income, on or off the platform.

qbi deduction — am i eligible?+

freelancers in non-specified-service businesses can claim a 20% qualified business income deduction up to income limits. consulting/legal/financial services have phase-outs. consult a cpa.
